2 What is Kailash
Kailash OS is a NixOS-based Linux distribution for security professionals and AI engineers working on AI-native offence, defence and platform work — built declaratively with Nix flakes. It keeps the integrated experience Kali popularised (curated tools, desktop menu categories, live images, generated documentation) and re-aims it at four pillars: appsec, apisec, mlsec, aisec.
2.1 Why it exists
Security work on AI systems needs tooling that is:
- Reproducible — an experimental result only counts if it can be re-run against the same tool versions. Every package is pinned to an exact source revision with a content hash; the lockfile is the version of the system.
- Declared, not implied — the tool catalogue is a single manifest that drives packaging, the desktop menu, the CLI, and this guide’s reference section. Nothing is installed ad hoc; nothing drifts.
- Safety-aware by construction — tools that talk to live targets or run experimental code are classified and gated, not silently enabled (see Safety classes).
2.2 What it is not
Kailash inherits Kali’s shape, not its full inventory. Deliberately out of scope: no Active Directory / lateral-movement arsenal, no social-engineering pack, and no wifi/RF/Bluetooth attack tooling — with one opt-in carve-out: software-defined radio (SDR) is kept because it is the substrate for signal/voice ML research, not a radio hacking kit. The classic layer is a smaller, opinionated, software-only subset of Kali’s ~300 tools.
2.3 Who it is for
Practitioners and researchers doing AI security assessment:
- Red-team work against AI systems — LLM red teaming (jailbreaks, prompt injection, multi-turn attacks), adversarial ML, agentic and MCP attack surfaces.
- Defenders and evaluators — guardrails, detection and observability, assurance/evals, model provenance and signing.
- Platform engineers — the MLOps, storage, serving and local inference stack that hosts and observes the models under test.
The pairing thesis behind the catalogue: an attack tool is most useful when the system that observes and defends against it ships alongside it — the distribution carries both halves of the exercise.
